French AI startup Mistral has raised €3 billion at a valuation of around €21 billion, or $24 billion, in what the company describes as the largest equity funding round by a privately owned European technology firm.
The round was jointly led by existing investor PSG Equity, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund. Samsung and the Scaleup Europe Fund both invested in Mistral for the first time.
Mistral Chief Financial Officer Johan Bergqvist said the fundraising makes the company Europe’s second-highest-valued private technology group. He said the new capital will support the company’s models and investment in frontier research as it competes with larger international rivals.
Mistral is widely viewed as Europe’s strongest candidate to build a leading AI company, although it remains substantially smaller than its US competitors. Anthropic is valued at $965 billion and OpenAI at $852 billion, with both companies planning public listings this year.
The company has not set a timetable for an initial public offering. Bergqvist said an IPO remains an option, but added that its timing is still uncertain and that Mistral is not currently holding discussions about one.
Why this matters
The funding reflects growing concern in Europe about technological sovereignty and dependence on foreign AI providers. Bergqvist said Europe needs its own AI provider, particularly as geopolitical restrictions have raised questions about access to advanced technology.
Mistral develops open models that allow more than 125 customers to download and customise systems on their own servers. The company is on track to reach $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of the year, with growth particularly strong in Asia and North America.
Microsoft, which agreed in July to spend billions on Mistral’s computing infrastructure in Europe, did not participate in the latest funding round. The new capital nevertheless gives Mistral additional room to expand its models, pursue research and establish itself as a European alternative in the global AI market.
