Apple released iOS 20 beta 3 on July 24 2026 introducing on-device AI agents that execute multi-step workflows across native and third-party apps. The agents operate exclusively on A19 and M4 chips without requiring internet connectivity for basic tasks.

Developers can register custom agent actions through the new AgentKit framework. Apple reports 40 percent faster task completion compared with Siri in internal benchmarks.

Work on the agent system began after the company acquired three AI startups in 2024 and 2025. iOS 20 will reach general availability in September 2026.

Previous iOS releases added limited on-device intelligence but lacked the persistent agent architecture introduced in this beta.

Why this matters

Apple's on-device approach addresses privacy concerns that have slowed adoption of cloud-based AI agents from competitors. The strategy also reduces latency and operational costs for users.

Android competitors are expected to announce similar local agent features at Google I/O in 2027.

Apple will open AgentKit to all developers in the fall 2026 release cycle.
