The data includes names, addresses, payment card tokens, and loyalty program histories from transactions between 2023 and 2025. The retailer, identified in reports as a national home goods chain, confirmed the breach started June 28.
The group used a zero-day in the retailer's VPN appliance to gain initial access and moved laterally for 26 days. Federal agencies including CISA and the FBI were notified on July 5. The retailer has begun notifying affected customers and offered two years of credit monitoring.
Akira has conducted over 140 attacks since rebranding in 2023 and previously targeted manufacturing and healthcare. The group uses custom encryption and double extortion tactics. Payment card tokens were not full PAN data, limiting immediate fraud risk according to the retailer.
