NeuralStackGoogle DeepMind and Novartis signed a five-year extension of their AI drug discovery partnership on July 17 2026. The expanded deal includes co-development of a 1 billion parameter protein design model trained on proprietary Novartis assay data. The first three candidates from the original 2023 agreement are scheduled to enter Phase 1 clinical trials in early 2027.
DeepMind will contribute AlphaFold 3 architecture improvements while Novartis supplies wet-lab validation resources. The partnership has already designed 14 novel protein binders with sub-nanomolar affinity.
The original collaboration began in 2023 and produced two peer-reviewed papers in Nature Biotechnology. Financial terms of the extension were not disclosed.
DeepMind has pursued multiple life-science partnerships since releasing AlphaFold 2 in 2021.
